Open to all college students or art students whether in a university program or a tutorial or museum-based painting class, ArtPetron has two categories - oil/acrylic and watercolor. There will be six (6) major winners and six (6) runners-up for each category. All qualified participating students will be given certificates of participation. Additionally, the schools of the first prize winners will receive a computer set complete with printer and scanner.

Formally launched last May 2001, application forms were sent to more than 1500 colleges, 200 museums and galleries, and to 900 Petron Service Stations all over the country.

Studio 5 Designs, a multi-awarded graphic design agency, is the project secretariat. It is tasked to screen all entries and make sure that participants have complied with all the necessary requirements.

A total number of 356 entries were officially received by 25 July 2001. More than half of the participants learned about the contest through ArtPetron posters in their schools/museums.
